Dec 30 - Lines

Practice with the light and dark pencils I got for Christmas. Notice how much smoother the lines get after just a short warm up. I should really do warm up exercises before I draw.

Dec 29 - Another Eye Study

I've been taught in art that the iris of babies is the same size as adults, but it never seemed right to me. So when a friend posted a photo of her family, I decided to do some photoshopping to test it out:

In order, the eyes are hers, her baby's, and her husband's. I haven't adjusted the sizes at all.
Her son's eyes are much smaller than hers (obviously), and even looking at it, it still doesn't totally make sense to me how it works.

Dec 28 - Christ sketch

I wanted to do a picture of Christ, and I found a reference drawing that looked interesting to me. This one ended up straying a lot from the original, which felt a bit empowering.

Dec 26 - Mme Pierre Gautreau

A second drawing from the Sargent portrait book. I didn't notice until I had already done the lay-in that Sargent actually had the image tightly in the top right corner, rather than center.

Dec 25 - Gabriel Faure

James got me a book of Sargent Portrait Drawings for Christmas, along with some art supplies. I really liked the lines on this one.

Dec 22 - Annie

We watched the new Annie; it was not that great of a movie but I loved the "Opportunity" song, and was not surprised to find out it was written by Sia.

Dec 12 - Brother

A friend of mine posted an old photograph of his brother on the anniversary of his death. I wanted to do a sketch and send it to him, but I feel like this is too bold for a child's portrait. I do like how much easier it is to "draw big" and use more space on facial features.

Dec 9 - Cake

Drawn on a flight; I realized too late that I forgot my art supplies going to Sacramento.

Dec 7 - Jen Draft

This picture is a fail and if I had more time tonight I'd do it over so I wouldn't have to post it. But I'm running out of time, and without it I have nothing to post, so for the sake of the project here it is. I'll re-do it sometime soon, and I'll have the overhead light on (it was off by request, but I really think that's part of what messed me up). That and many other things. Now the pressure's really on to get it right next time :-)

Dec 6 - Old Testament Pics

My drawing project for the day is some quick illustrations for the 4 vignettes for the lesson I'm teaching on Sunday (Dan 1, 3, 6, and Esther) (note - drawn on Saturday but picture taken on Sunday for the sake of context)

Dec 5 - Birthday Draft

I've had this cake that I draw / paint for people's birthdays. I don't remember when it started, but it's probably been close to 20 years now. I'd really love to make a lovely / definitive version and turn it into a card. To that end, here's a draft I made last night playing with frosting lowlights, etc in photoshop. It's a long way from a final product, but a good first step.

Dec 4 - Lead Kindly Light

Dec 4 - Pepper

Practicing photoshop painting. This is from another tutorial, although it wasn't nearly as thorough as yesterday's (basically it said "paint a pepper" and gave suggestions of brush sizes and opacity). So it's a bit rough, but I'm going to call it done.

Dec 2 - How Firm a Foundation... Part 1

Tonight I made a picture for the song James was going to record (How Firm a Foundation). Except... when he recorded it, he did a very cool original spin on the song that longer matches this image. Tomorrow I'll make a more appropriate cover and upload them both to YouTube. For today, here's the now-obsolete image:
